Today, posters are produced for almost every film made, and collecting movie posters has become a major hobby. Come experience an all new show featuring hundreds of unframed, original vintage movie posters available for purchase at ART on 5th, near downtown Austin, Texas.

The modern poster, as we know it, dates back to 1870 when the printing industry finally perfected color lithography and made mass production possible. By the 1890’s, the technique had spread throughout Europe and had become recognized as a vital art form. The new art form attracted artists from all professional levels, from painters like Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Jules Cheret and Mucha to threatrical and commercial designers. In a little over a hundred years, poster styles have ranged from Art Nouveau, Symbolism, Cubism, and Art Deco to the more formal Bauhaus and often incoherent hippie posters of the 1960s.

In the United States, the film industry quickly discovered that vibrantly colored posters were an effective way to sell tickets to their movies. From Humphrey Bogart and Audrey Hepburn, to Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington, thousands of Hollywood’s most famous and infamous stars have been memorably captured in print for promotional use in theaters worldwide. Today, posters are produced for almost every film made, and collecting original movie posters has become a major hobby.

Vintage movie posters have not only become a hobby, many have become great investments. As movies and actors age, they gain or wane in popularity, or entertainment value. Their respective paraphernalia also gains or wains in value. The most valuable movie poster in the world, of which there is only one known copy, is the stone litho poster of Frankenstein, the 1931 movie. Although not all movie posters are as rare or valuable as the Frankenstein poster, they all have great graphics and make a perfect addition for today’s home media rooms.

Collecting vintage movie posters for decorating or investment value is a great way to capture your favorite actors or cinematic moments forever. It is also an affordable way to spice up your home in these tough, economic times. But finding the poster you are looking for can be a challenge, especially if the movie is old. There are tons of vintage movie posters available online, but there is no way to ensure the authenticity or condition of the art until you have paid and received it. Buying any artwork online, but especially vintage posters, is very risky.

If you are in Austin, Texas this July, you’re in luck. Come experience an all new show featuring hundreds of unframed, original vintage movie posters available for purchase at ART on 5th, near downtown Austin, Texas. Experience American and European movie release posters for classics such as King Kong, James Bond, Gone with the Wind, The Hustler and Scarface. You are sure to find the perfect movie poster for your wall—probably multiple pieces. These rare posters from the original release of each movie are in high demand! ART on 5th’s vintage movie poster sale begins Friday, July 17th and goes through Sunday, July 19th. They will be open Friday and Saturday from 10 AM to 6 PM, and Sunday, 12 PM to 5 PM.

Her explosions of color and bold patterns convey joy, excitement, pleasure and exhilaration, while the softer and more introspective works evoke a sense of reflection, meditation and contemplation. His paintings weave together layers of color and texture to create an impression of the subjects. He paints vividly with recognizable, but sometimes illusional photo-like imagery that appears distinctly abstract to the close observer.
Never-before-exhibited memorabilia, informational panels, and the complete collection of the “Secret Art of Dr. Seuss" limited edition artwork comprise Art on 5th’s “The Secret Life of Dr. Seuss: Art and Memorabilia” exhibit lasting throughout the entire month of May. The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss and Cohen’s rare collection go way beyond the known world of Seuss and reveal the secret and extensive projects that allowed him to evolve his imaginative style.

Theodor Seuss Geisel is one of the most popular children’s authors of all time. Over the course of his lifetime, he penned, under the pseudonym Dr. Seuss, over 60 children’s titles, including: Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, and One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish. But there was more to the Geisel’s career than his knack for rhyme and meter. Some say Dr. Seuss lived five life times, producing more creative and inspirational work than a “Who” could shake a “What” at. The man was so good at what he did, everyone wanted to use him for everything.

Dr. Seuss’ career was also blessed by his unique and imaginative illustrations. He created very whimsical magazine covers for Judge and Ballyhoo, as well as illustrations and articles for The Saturday Evening Post, Life, and Vanity Fair. He became recognized for his advertisements for Flit insecticide, cigarettes, motor oil, where many of his children’s characters of mermaids, sailors and seals took shape. He also created the Hanky Bird bottle topper for Hanky-Bannister Whiskey, designed promotional campaign puzzle art for Standard Oil’s marine department, and molded toys based on his characters with mix-and-match body parts.

Dr. Seuss was also involved in the World War II efforts, designing popular propaganda: “Kill Squander Bug, Buy War Bonds.” He authored pamphlets, like “This is Ann”, on how to avoid malaria. He made films and cartoons for the troops to inform and educate them on their expected behavior abroad. Geisel was an annual participant in Navy boat shows, even MC-ing one year. He designed annual artwork for the show that was printed on memorabilia pint glasses and a life-sized, Seussian-decorated display where, for a small fee, you could go up and become the “Admiral of the Seuss Navy” in a picture holding a Seuss Navy passport with a mermaid.

He went on to writing a few adult books, such as “The Seven Lady Godiva’s”, and a few films, such “The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T”, both not receiving the popularity of his children’s catalogue. All of these rare pieces of never-before-exhibited memorabilia, historical panels, and the complete collection of the “Secret Art of Dr. Seuss" limited edition artwork comprises ART on 5th’s “The Secret Life of Dr. Seuss: Art and Memorabilia” exhibit, available for viewing throughout the entire month of May, 2009. The collection dates from Dr. Seuss’s Dartmouth College years through his extensive advertising and book publishing careers to lesser-known side projects such as the Seuss Navy and the “5,000 Fingers of Dr. T.”

Hundreds of rare and collectible memorabilia items will be available for purchase and range vastly in price. The most expensive piece will be a gondolier, merchandise left over from the “5,000 Fingers” movie from 1953, going for a couple thousand dollars. But there will be brilliant and rare pieces available at more affordable prices. Custom art coasters start as low as $100. Copies of his first ever published cartoon will be available. Magazine covers he designed for Judge Magazine in 1929. There will be a number of first edition books for sale, including “The Seven Lady Godiva’s”, his first adult book in 1939. There will also be first editions that are in obscure languages, like “Horton Hears a Who” and “Cat in the Hat”, in Hungarian, Russian or German. There will be some English first editions of “Year of the Turtle”, “The King Stilts”, and “Horton Hatches the Egg”.

ART on 5th welcomes the world’s foremost collector of Dr. Seuss, Dr. Charles D. Cohen, as the guest speaker during the “BookSpring” Fundraiser on May 14th and Public Reception on May 15th, both beginning at 6:30 p.m. The “BookSpring” Fundraiser will have a door admission of $30 per adult directly benefiting BookSpring and the public reception will be free admission. ART on 5th is privileged to showcase many items from his personal collection in this never-before-seen exhibit. The Secret Art and Cohen’s collection go way beyond the known world of Dr. Seuss and reveal the little known and extensive projects that allowed him to evolve his imaginative style.

Art on 5th is recognized as Austin’s premier custom framing experts. With a unique design sense and a selection of over three thousand frames, they deliver quality craftsmanship in one-of-a-kind designs.

It is a rarity these days to come across a company or individual who invests as much skill and talent into their work as they do passion and common sense. A metaphorical crossroads of unique perspective with natural sense of design. While most of us struggle to meticulously harvest our passions at any metaphorical intersection, it’s not a rarity when you’re Joe Sigel, founder and owner of Austin’s largest contemporary art gallery and premier source for “killer” custom frames: ART on 5th. Sigel’s gallery displays the unique exhibit of The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss and many local artists, including the Austin cityscapes of Paul Stankiewicz and George Williams. They also pride themselves on their “killer” custom framing, surely a result of their unique design sense and extremely large selection of frames.

ART on 5th’s custom frames are “museum quality,” but, as Sigel himself points out, unless you are going to a hobby shop, most custom frame shops will give you quality work. What differentiates ART on 5th from other frame shops and galleries is their unique approach to each piece, with an eye to uniqueness and enhancing the artwork with the frame. Each design is specifically developed for that particular piece

A common mistake made at many shops and galleries is the choice of colored paper for the mat. Most framers are trained to match the color of the mat to a dominant color in the piece. This mistake is made due to misguided training that ingrains the practice into their design instincts. ART on 5th has experienced its profound success through the use of neutral toned mats and liners to provide a neutral space around the piece, focuses instead on matching the dominate colors of the piece in the actual frame itself and the overall theme of the artwork. Seeing is believing. When customers pick of their finished framing from ART on 5th, it is not uncommon to hear exclamations of shock as to how great their piece now looks.

Like so many other successful artisans, it is the little things that help distinguish ART on 5th’s custom frames from the rest. For example, ART on 5th uses acrylic instead of glass, making the final product more durable, affordable, lighter in weight, and last longer. They also use Kevlar cords instead of wire on the back, due of its strength and durability. This also prevents any accidents that would otherwise be caused by the wire rusting or un-brading. These small steps in custom framing, along with their unique approach to matting and their design sense in selecting the frame itself, combine to produce original framing concepts that greatly enhance the art itself.

Sigel has been balancing his experience, knowledge and passion for eleven years at ART on 5th, located at 1501 W. 5th Street, near downtown Austin. He credits the gallery’s success to their unique exhibits, artistic diversity, design experience, and impeccable eye for killer custom framing. ART on 5th is the largest contemporary art gallery in Austin and has the largest selection of frames in Austin, containing over three thousand frames from 13 different suppliers. Whether you are in the market for contemporary art, custom frames, metaphorical crossroads or creative inspiration, ART on 5th should be your first and only source.

Most people are already equipped with the necessary skills that enable them to judge other people, but this is in the real world. All it takes is an adjustment of the inbuilt skills when regarding a person in the physical world, to be translated and put to use in the cyber world to judge a person's dating profile. Once you get the hang of it, you will be surprised by how revealing or not, a dating profile can be and how very much like a dating profile a person is likely to be.

Evaluating your own social recognition skills

Take a jotting pad and a pen and scratch out the primary characteristics you usually notice in a person when meeting them for the first time. The best way to do this is to recall at least five incidences of meeting people for the first time. In a sort of slow motion flashback, recognize the characteristics of the person that you first noticed, that helped you judge the person. The dating profile of a person is the online equivalent of meeting a person for the first time.

Run a few profile searches in random and look at the profile characteristics that are revealed in the results. Match the revealed character markers, against the physical world characteristics that you would notice in a person. Mark out the ones that would help you make an informed evaluation of a dating profile.

What you see is what you get

Just as pictures can tell a thousand words, you will be able to sort through and instantly judge a person, primarily by looking at their pictures. However, you should not use only images of a person to guide your evaluation of their dating profile. Add to your favorite selections some of the profiles that you instantly like from their pictures, and then further evaluate the dating profile.

Also equally informative is the writing style a person uses. A dating profile will contain enough of subjective information entered directly by the individual. Use the general mood of the writing to come up with a mental picture of the nature of the person. A lot of 'I this' and 'I that' would for example, indicate a very ego centric person, but just a few instances, may reveal a very jovial and outgoing person.

Sing your inbuilt evaluation skills

When you are looking through a dating profile that is visually appealing, you will want to concentrate on some of the physical defining characteristics that build towards a person's self. These would include, the indicated height and weight (as compared to the person's picture), self defined nature (also when compared to the expression on the person's face on the profile image) and other physical characteristics that may help you draw a mental picture. In the physical world too, such physical characteristics would immediately bring to mind a mental profiling of a person, during a first meeting.

Finally, rely on your instinct. People are generally very well geared to mentally judge a dating profile in the same manner that they instinctively judge a person in the physical world. It is surprising at how valid and true most instinctive judgments prove to be.
